Rubber Underlayment

Rubber Underlayment is manufactured from commercial-grade rubber and acts as a critical component for use under tile, wood, ceramic and laminate floors to reduce noise, protect flooring, provide insulation and mitigate cracking from settlement.

• Rubber Underlayment lays flat and doesn't curl up.

• Rubber is the best material for use as underlayment due to this substance being manufactured from heavy-duty, non-porous, mold & mildew resistant rubber.

• Ideal for use under wood, tile, marble, ceramic, terrazzo and laminate floors (though not recommended under vinyl).

• Available in 5mm, 6mm, 10mm and 12mm thicknesses.

• Rubber offers superior sound insulation from loud talking, music and tv as well as objects that strike the floor (like dropped objects and shoes). Additionally, rubber provides insulation against cold subfloors, especially in winter.

• Please note that the color/color intensity can vary from one roll to the next depending on the raw rubber components. Also, it is not intended for use as top-layer, rubber fitness flooring.

Customer Questions & Answers

Can't find the answer you need? Ask a Question
Is the rubber underlayment good for sound dampening? Is it better than traditional rubber flooring?
- Jimmy C.

Rubber Underlayment works great at dampening sounds between floors.  The more porous construction allows the rubber the better absorb sound than heavy-duty rubber gym flooring, which has a more dense design and thus the underlayment would be the best option for that purpose.

We have a slight moisture problem in our basement. Would the rubber underlayment help protect the flooring we want to put down?
- Margaret C.

Rubber underlyament would elevate the flooring above the subfloor, helping prevent damage due to moisture.  If there is significant moisture, that issue should be addressed before putting down the rubber (or any other flooring) first.

Would this underlayment be suitable for use under laminate wood flooring?
- Ellen D.

Absolutely!  Rubber Underlayment adds a layer of cushion and comfort, especially when used under hard, rigid flooring.  The rubber will provide anti-fatigue benefits, especially when standing on the hard finished floor for longer periods of time.

Our office in the city is above a metro train stop. The vibrations are particular bad in the lower level reception area. Would covering the floor with underlayment help with vibrations (in addition to noise)?
- Rodney D.

You're absolutely correct - in addition to noise vibration, Rubber Underlayment does a great job absorbing vibrational energy and can help dampen the effects.  Using the underlayment will certainly make the reception space feel more calm, quiet and inviting!

I live in an apartment and my landlord requires a mat or rug on the floor if I bring in a treadmill. Do I want this or rubber flooring?
- Sammy D.

Although the Rubber Underlayment would absorb sound and vibrations, it's not designed for the constant pounding and abuse that a treadmill would cause over the years.  We recommend either the Fitness Equipment Gym Mats for lighter-duty use or the Ultimate Stand-Alone Mats for faster running / more intense workouts.

Why shouldn't I use the underlayment with a vinyl floor?
- Wanda S.

Although not common and not right away, it's possible that the rubber underlayment could react with your vinyl flooring and may deteriorate the material with time.  It's best to check with your vinyl flooring manufacturer before installing the rubber underlayment.

I see you mention the rubber will provide sound and vibrational insulation but what about temperature? Our basement floor is FREEZING and I'm hoping this underlayment can help with that too!
- Taylor T.

Yes, this type of rubber is more porous and thus also acts as a temperature insulator and would help keep your basement floor more temperate, especially if being used underneath other flooring products (like tile, wood, laminate, etc.).

Why can't I use underlayment instead of rubber gym flooring?
- Ali W.

Although both manufactured from similar raw rubber components, the underlayment is a less dense / more porous design that allows for shock/sound/vibrational absorption and not engineered to take the punishment typically associated with exercise equipment, free weights and the rigors or aerobic exercise.
